FILMMAKER INTERVIEW

What do you want the audience to take away from the film?

That no matter how beautiful our surroundings are, none of them will replace the people around us.

Why are opportunities like Film Prize Junior important to students like you?

It gives students a way to share their work to a wider audience and be recognized for it. That’s important, because you can buy gear, but if you’re in an area that media isn’t a big deal, you can’t buy recognition. You can only earn it.

Which scene did you have an absolute blast filming and why?

The restaurant scenes were really cool to shoot; it was an intensely beautiful place, and the chef was the one waiting for us when we arrived. Some of the background ambience is made of him and my mom making conversation behind the camera.

What obstacles challenged you and your crew the most when completing this film? What did you learn from making this short film?

My biggest lesson shooting this one was to ask people yourself with you own voice! Every place we shot at I called in advance, and it took me weeks to get into these locations. The week before shooting, I didn’t know anybody, and now, I have connections all over Natchez.

What advice would you give to future participants in Film Prize Junior?

The only thing I can tell you is do it yourself. Go and do things that you know you don’t know how to do. Everything you hear that you don’t know about, look it up and learn as much as you can. Your means with rise with your knowledge; that’s why even people with big budgets can still make bad films.
