FILMMAKER INTERVIEW

What do you want the audience to take away from the film?

I want the audience to take away that they can have fun with their passions. It doesn’t always have to be serious, this film started out as a joke, it was a pun. It then snowballed into a script and eventually a film. This entire film started from a pun and this pun let me, an aspiring filmmaker, pursue my passion whilst also having fun.

Why are opportunities like Film Prize Junior important to students like you?

Well, it’s important because it provides many students the opportunity to express themselves in the media of film. It gives motivation for many aspiring young filmmakers to work on something that they’re passionate about, and potentially get recognized for their passion and hard work.

Which scene did you have an absolute blast filming and why?

The lab scene where our main characters are creating the crystal blue bread was probably the most fun to film. This is because we got to mess around in a lab and experiment with creating various concoctions. It was also our first shoot so it was really fun as everyone had to get use to filming together, as the majority of us have never done anything like this before.

What obstacles challenged you and your crew the most when completing this film? What did you learn from making this short film?

The availability of the cast and crew was the most notable challenge when filming. Everyone would have urgent school work or test to study for, or there would be emergencies like illness or pregnancy. This would make filming on a planned-out schedule next to impossible. So when planning out days to film it was more like a gamble than an actual thought-out plan. What I learned was that audio and lighting are very crucial to selling a scene they can make or break it, even something as minor as forests noises in an outdoor scene can sell the scene.

What advice would you give to future participants in Film Prize Junior?

Make your scripts flexible. We’re all students with outside lives where anything can happen. Every character in the film has been recasted at some point. Some minor characters especially were recasted on a day of the shoot. On top of that the script was rewritten a multitude of times. What I’m trying to get at is that life is unpredictable and your movie should be able to adapt and survive.
