FILMMAKER INTERVIEW

What do you want the audience to take away from the film?

Sometimes we get stuck in our ways, or life deals us lemons and it has a huge impact of how we view life. Every moment is a chance to do something good or thoughtful. We want people to know it’s never too late to do the right thing.

Why are opportunities like Film Prize Junior important to students like you?

Students get to tell their stories! They get to express themselves verbally and emotionally to create an image that can have a huge impact on others. Students get to be exposed to different aspect of film from acting, directing, writing, camera operating, and prop making. This project make ignite a students to find their passion in Film or Theatre.

Which scene did you have an absolute blast filming and why?

Filming the elves conversations was like putting a hidden camera in class and recording students having normal conversations. We tried to make the character as relatable as possible to the audience. We also built a set for the living room house scene. It was so much fun pretending to be in a actually home, we got so much support from the school, friends, and other to transform our stage on campus into a room for our film.

What obstacles challenged you and your crew the most when completing this film? What did you learn from making this short film?

The Filming schedule was hard this year, given that many of my participants were involved in sports or other after-school activities. We also had lot of breaks and struggled putting multiple film days together. In the end, we were able to do it, but next year we will probably start significantly earlier. Editing and Post Production is your best friend. If we could get things close to perfect while filming different angles, then in editing we could fix mistake or downplay in a way that makes it look like it was always meant to be.

What advice would you give to future participants in Film Prize Junior?

Have a place where you write down your idea for stories. Dedicate some time each week to taking one of those ideas and seeing how far you can do with it. Get a group of friends together in person or on zoom and have them read your work to see if reads how you imagine it in your head and ask them to give you feedback on the story. If you do this often you create a bank for future projects.
