FILMMAKER INTERVIEW

What do you want the audience to take away from the film?

The short film is a Father-Son bonding story with a supernatural element to it. It was partially based on the stories I’ve grown up hearing about the Louisiana Black Panther, which is a scientific anomaly.

Why are opportunities like Film Prize Junior important to students like you?

My goal is ultimately entertaining and amusing the audience. I also intend to portray a heartfelt story of a father and a son rekindling their relationship.

Which scene did you have an absolute blast filming and why?

The scene I had the most fun filming was the monologue delivered by the father. This was similar to a story that happened to my Dad, which I thought added to the realism of its delivery, but the shot of the fire in the corner of the frame behaved in a way that lent itself to the overall atmosphere.

What obstacles challenged you and your crew the most when completing this film? What did you learn from making this short film?

The main obstacle happened to be the time crunch. Due to scheduling and conflicts, the entire film had to be shot in one afternoon. Time was of the essence, as it would eventually become too dark to actually film, with the lantern scene being proof. We had to use the lantern out of necessity, or it would have been impossible to see the characters.

What advice would you give to future participants in Film Prize Junior?

I learned how to fully develop an idea into a film. With months of planning, rewrites, adaptations, and edits, I was finally able to turn what was originally a simple story about a few highschoolers hunting a cryptid into a fairly heartfelt father-son drama. This was something I have never done before, and I was glad to gain this experience.
