FILMMAKER INTERVIEW

What do you want the audience to take away from the film?

We want people of all ages and walks of life to view this film and realize that’s it’s okay to be different, and it’s okay to be who you are.

Why are opportunities like Film Prize Junior important to students like you?

I never thought that I would ever write a film or make a film. So, this was kind of a lifetime opportunity that we all stumbled upon. I want that opportunity to be available for other students like me.

Which scene did you have an absolute blast filming and why?

The scene where Korey comes in when the girls are talking about him was so much fun to film. He starts to release some of his pent-up anger and express frustration, even though his best friend calms him down afterwards. In all actuality, we all are friends, so it was difficult to film because we kept laughing, even though we knew it was supposed to be a serious scene!

What obstacles challenged you and your crew the most when completing this film? What did you learn from making this short film?

It was challenging having to put myself out there and act. It was something I never thought about doing for the film. I didn’t expect at all to play the main character. It was frustrating to have to redo shots over and over again just to get things right. I also had to be patient with other people and not take things too personally.

What advice would you give to future participants in Film Prize Junior?

Don’t get too caught up in your emotions, because at the end of the day, you made a film! You’ve got a film under your belt. How many people can say that?
