FILMMAKER INTERVIEW

What do you want the audience to take away from the film?

I want audiences to feel almost uncertain, as if something needs to come next to tie everything into a neat little ribbon. But that’s the point. I want audiences to get a glimpse into Briar’s life and make assumptions from her actions and the world surrounding her, and to leave asking “what comes next?” Spoiler alert, a lot. I also want to emphasize the idea that more information that can enhance and clarify the story can be learned through the backgrounds and setting, through the recurring motifs and the worldbuilding. I want to share this fictional town full of stories with an audience who will have the ability to think about the story.

Why are opportunities like Film Prize Junior important to students like you?

It allows for students to get a grasp on the creative process and the steps it takes to make a finished product efficiently and in a timely manner. It allows for teamwork and cooperation amongst groups who are working on films, and to those working independently how to manage their time and prioritize. It allows for a student’s work to be seen and recognized and appreciated.

Which scene did you have an absolute blast filming and why?

I had a blast planning all of the little details within the backgrounds! It felt like I was making a scavenger hunt, planting consistent little details in each scene and seeing everything come together! The ending scene when Briar and Lasso finally meet was one that came together so well and one that is my personal favorite, down to the animation, colors, and music!

What obstacles challenged you and your crew the most when completing this film? What did you learn from making this short film?

Pacing was definitely an obstacle. As the only animator, artist, and overall person working on this film, I had to devise my time and prioritize some scenes over others in order to get these done in a timely fashion and to tell a clearer story. I also learned to step out of my comfort zone and experiment with animation that I haven’t before, and even dabble in some music for some scenes.

What advice would you give to future participants in Film Prize Junior?

Don’t be afraid to improvise or change something last minute, even if it stems away from the original plan. Having the skill to quickly make a change that’ll enhance the overall story and to make that change in an effective manner is an important skill, for filmmakers and animators alike.Try things you might not have ever tried before, get out of your comfort zone and just create!
